So happy right now!

I went for an interview with Jonathan from Phawker online journal this afternoon and I now have an internship position there.  To add to this, I’ve realised I’ve gained a lot of confidence since being here and I have also LOST WEIGHT!
YES!
(Sorry to sound like one of those really annoying people, but I need to express my utter delight at recent events)
To update...
I went to Boston the other weekend which was unbelievably cool (yet bloody freezing) and also visited Ellie at Clark University in Worcester, MA.  It was so great to see Ellza C-Dawg and I enjoyed fabulous English company.  I also met some of her friends and they were all so welcoming and interesting.  Big up to all those amazing people!
Fun fact: There's a building in Boston opposite the old city hall which has a grasshopper for a weather vane - I thought this was pretty cool.
This week happens to be finals week so I can't write much right now (I'm actually meant to be working on my Creative Writing portfolio), but it's FINALLY the last leg of the semester and I get to see my wonderful family on Friday.  Big squidges are in order for them.
I have also made a new friend called Robert and I'm continuing to meet new and exciting people everyday.  I've also experienced a couple of Basketball games in the last few weeks and all I can say is that they are SO MUCH BETTER THAN FOOTBALL GAMES.  My god.  Next on the list: the Philadelphia Flyers (ice hockey team).

Other belated shizz I was meant to tell you: Niagra Falls was amazing (the Canadian side kicks the American side's ass).  And about the Italian I.D card...it was Alessandro's idea, not mine!  I'm actually going to his house tonight to say goodbye to him and Luciana. :( They have finished their internship at the Italian Consulate in Philly and are heading back to Italy on Tuesday and Wednesday.  They are both great people and will be dearly missed by all of the International crew.

Happy Holidays everyone (I hope the snow's not getting you down - Or maybe it has disappeared now? Let's hope so as too much snow is never good).
Peace.

My First Thanksgiving!

Well today was very exciting because I went to the Rogers' household for Thanksgiving...in Delaware. They are the family of my Creative Writing buddy, Julie. The turkey goodness and pumpkin cheesecake scoffing took place at Julie's grandparents' house and they were so welcoming. Barbara was telling me about a friend of hers named Harold [Something] who made it big as a stage director in London and the day was full of funny family stories and Rogers/Furdella banter. Julie's precious little cousin Krista was also there to provide entertainment as she jumped around the room and played hide and seek with Julie's brother CJ. I had such a great day and I even left the house with some leftovers...yum, yum. I still don't really understand the point of Thanksgiving though. Maybe that's why some Americans call it Turkey Day as it's just an excuse to eat turkey and pie, really.

The Edge is very quiet now as I sit here on my bed watching Sex and the City and eating gummy sweets that I bought by scraping together the last few cents in my purse.

This week has been really fun overall. Matt and Gadher came to stay in Philly for a couple of days during their city travels: New York --> Philly --> D.C. It was lovely to have the Leicester boyz here and to do touristy things and eat cheesesteaks. I think they loved Philly; they seemed to be pretty happy here. I also introduced them to the wonder that is Tito and we got very drunk at his Thanksgiving party.

I don’t know why…

…but I get one too many stares from people on campus. Is it because I have loo roll stuck to my shoe or ketchup from a hot dog around my mouth?…Or do I just scream ‘English’?

Some Turkish man came up to me today and started talking to me about photography (considering I was reading Emmet Gowin’s “Photographs”) and then proceeded to ask me how he could subtly tell his best friend that his girlfriend is a crazy woman and that he shouldn’t marry her!

So, yes, I’ve had an interesting day so far and now I need to decide what food to bring that’s even remotely British to Alessandro’s multi-ethnic feast this evening. Without an oven this may prove difficult. Any suggestions are welcome.

Halloween weekend was good by the way. Everyone got into the spirit rather nicely (which is how it's done in America apparently). I dressed as Beetlejuice the whole weekend, which was actually a fluke costume; all it took was borrowing Morgan's striped blazer and realising that it was totally Beetlejuice-esque rather than Gaga (Gaga was my original choice). I ended up at a Jewish Fraternity party on the Friday with friends dressed as pandas, leopards and angels and then a house party on Saturday with Flo, Morgan and Oxiclean dude (actually, this was my friend Zach, not Billy Mays). There I saw some guy dressed as Princess Diana with a wheel over his head - a tad distasteful to say the least and I don't think he expected to see anyone English at that party to be quite honest!
I need to update you all soon on recent happenings, including a cheeky trip to Niagra Falls a few weeks ago, a day trip to D.C and also funny little incidents involving hookah, First Friday, Flight of the Conchord's 'Business Time' being sung at an open mic night at Saxby's and acquiring a carta d'identita from my friend. (Hello, my name is now Alessandro!)

I have also acquired some new friends which I shall splurge about soon.

I bought a blazer from the Salvation Army.

It has gold buttons with Eagles on them. This could become a regular shopping spot for me.

I had a great day out on Saturday with Jeezy, Morgan and Flo. Girly days shopping and chilling in Rittenhouse Square are the best. So is 7 o'clock pizza and chips.

I've been listening to a lot of mellow songs this weekend. For what reason, I have no idea. But Bon Iver's The Wolves is incredible. It's winding me down after a great weekend of parties, tailgating before the Phillies game, leaving bags in the Fresh Grocer, making eggs IN toast like they do in V for Vendetta (so I've heard) and eating Jeezy's home-made Korean food with everyone on the 8th floor. Life is good.

Joe's Pizza is the best kind of pizza. Broccoli, tomato and Riccota - yum!
                                                                          I love my Yeoun Joo

Sunny Days

It's finally brightened up after a couple of disgustingly rainy days. I thought for a second that we'd brought the English weather with us. Sorry Philadelphia.

I had a nice Saturday so a couple of pictures for this entry will suffice. I went to Reading Terminal Market and Liberty Bell too but the photos don't do them justice.  Actually, Liberty Bell was a bit of an anti-climax to be honest! I also saw Amish people at Reading Terminal Market and I got a little fascinated by their baking skills; I had a delicious omlette and apple dumpling!

Beer Pong, Toffee Mocha Frappucinos and Sci-fi

Who knew there could be so much emotional turbulence in one week? Apparently living thousands of miles from home does this to you.

So, this week has been interesting. A little bit of drama regarding a small dose of homesickness and a large helping of tears, but, as always, this has passed and I'm feeling goooood. I've been researching societies tonight as I've not got round to that yet, so hopefully I'll be joining a cool club soon which will get me more involved with Temple life. Watch this space. A spot of volunteering may also be occurring, me being the charitable and loving person that I am!

I've been in the library a little too much this week, so it's probably best that I do something a little more thrilling with my weekdays. The weekends are always so much fun though. Me and Flo had a nice little day in Rittenhouse Square on Saturday, chilling in the park and reading Maggie: A Girl of the Streets. Needless to say, not a lot of reading got done as we always end up having ridiculous girly chats and procrastinating. It's got to be done on a fabulous day in the big city though. I also purchased a toffee mocha frappucino to enjoy in the park and all I can say is: WOW! It's like heaven in a cup. No joke. As is a breakfast muffin from Starbuck's. Utterly delicious, if ridiculously bad for you. I promise I'm not getting fat! I've been to the gym here and everything. I also attempted Zumba this evening, but the class was filled by the time I'd got there. Apparently you have to be there half an hour before the class in America.

You may be interested to know that there was rain today, and on Sunday! The English climate seems to have infiltrated the East. Not good. It was humid though so there's a subtle difference.

In other news, my weekend was pretty darn good. I ended up at three parties in the space of three days, two of which turned out to be incredibly fun. The third, well, not so much, but I did meet some lovely people and raided even more Philly apartments. These parties, apart from getting drunk, discussing my Englishness, being given bourbon whiskey initially hidden behind a sofa and meeting guys named Tito, are good for improving the beer ping skillz, mainly in basements of houses. I'm getting good at it! I've not quite won a game yet, but I'm playing against Americans so I think my losing is justified. I also met a guy this weekend who reads a book a day. A BOOK A DAY AND HE'S NOT EVEN AN ENGLISH MAJOR! I was thoroughly impressed.

The weekend ended with a forty minute sci-fi play on campus. It was pretty interesting actually as it had been adapted from a radio play. Name: Kaleidoscope. Writer: Ray Bradbury. Oh and let's not forget the tea, coffee and doughnuts in Bruce's room on Sunday evening. He needs to be English as he loves tea... a lot!

Interesting fact of the week: My roommate's uncle is the guy in LCD Soundsystem. She decided to annouce this on Monday and, of course, I went pretty mental. So did Ella from across the pond. :)

Paley

I've been in the library waaaay too much this week, so hopefully I'll have something interesting to post at the weekend!

Sunday, 19 September 2010

I went to a Russian Festival today. Bizarre to say the least, so I thought this was pretty interesting to note. Philly surprises me everyday. Oh and the Russians have a strange dress sense, particularly their traditional get-ups.

(Me and Matt Sick - yes, that is his surname. He's learning how to speak Russian right now).

I feel uncomfortably full

Last night needed to be freeze-framed. I would love to have stepped out of myself and seen what the hell was going on.

I woke up to find 3 guitars, a bunch of cups and bowls, a lime green chair and a packet of  Bicycle cards in my room this morning. But, I am pleased to report that I have now officially tried a Philly cheese steak. Not good for a hangover and I'm not really sure I enjoyed it all that much. Geno's, I don't know whether you are really all that.

(The line for Geno's was crazy.)

I also forgot to mention my new-found love for Snapple:

Laughter and Rocky

I'm writing this post as I sit in my room, listening to Grenouilles (reminding me a little bit of Norwich and the Birdcage after I downloaded the EP yesterday...it's good music so take a listen) and looking at all the mess from last night. A guitar on the floor, a travel guitar on the couch (yes a damn good jam session occurred last night and I met Phil's friend and Matt's friend who have both come to Temple for a couple of days) and a ton of dirty dishes and cups. Great. You know what I'll be doing later. Phil, Becca and Jeezy have just joined me in a discussion about what the hell happened last night. Oh and I don't think I've mentioned Phil (from Carlisle in PA) and Matt (from Wellsborough) before but I've been hanging out with them this week and I've never laughed so much in my entire life. Enough said, I think.

Anyway, regardless of the laughter, this week has been an emotional one. I got a little homesick, especially on Monday and the day didn't start off too well either so it was destined to be a bad one. But, this was just a minor glitch and I'm now back on track. I have to mention, though, that I'm not the only 8th Floor lodger that is feeling sad right now. Bad news to report:There was a bus accident last Saturday when a double decker bus that was going to Toronto was too tall to fit under a bridge, killing four people including Temple student Kevin Coffey, a close friend of Becca's roommate. R.I.P.

In other news, my grandparents and Dad have discovered the wonders of Skype! Hilarious experiences to say the least, but I thoroughly love Skype. Talking to people helped me feel a lot better. Classes have been interesting, but I can't work out whether I enjoy them more than those at home. They seem more school-like and I really don't like the whole raise-your-hand-when-you-want-to-speak thing. Outdated, especially at University. Oh America. But I have gained some pretty cool knowledge, especially of the photography variety. Check out a photographer named Harold Edgerton on Google. He's a dude. I also watched a film called Momento in my cinema studies class (my professor's name is Quincy Jone and he has amazing dreads -always a good combo), so I recommend that too.

So over the past couples of weeks I've been doing random stuff including drinking my new favourite drink (Four Loco - it's a killer) and going to a few house parties (everyone I meet loves my accent!), I saw some Amish people down my street selling fruit and flowers and I got very excited, tried a Pop Tart and juicy chews for the first time (I have yet to try Swedish Fish though - boo), I went to King of Prussia mall to have a little shop with the girls (I bought some incredible chords!) and my personal highlight was running up the steps of the Philadelphia Museum of Art like Rocky! YEAH! The museum was incredible and me, Flo and Becca saw some amazing pieces of art including a replica of Duchamp's urinal!

Other interesting facts: I found out Tanairi loves Incubus and Sublime, we got a little bit into Jersey Shore the other night (woops), Matt introduced me to the wonders of Biz Markie, the Phillies are currently first in their division, I am half-way to fully understanding the rules of American football thanks to Bruce and Dan, I went to my first college football game the other week (Temple won against Villanova 31-24) and I want to write for Temple News! I'm hoping this is successful.

Today's antics will involve going to the Love Park (maybe), sitting in one of Philly's amazing parks reading with the crew, and trying my first Philly Cheese Steak. It's a bit of a crime that I haven't had one yet!

'The best damn thing to come out of D.C'...'Oh Yeah!'

So I've almost been at Temple and in North Philly for almost a week now (it's 30th August - 14:47 here), so it's about time I updated the blog (sorry for the wait!) One thing to note though, before I go into any detail, is that I love it here. The weather is incredible (I wish I wasn't so pale) and the people are great. Big up to the 8th Floor massive!

To start off the trip, the airport was depressing. I hate good byes and I despised having to say farewell to my family and Ella. I cried, which is not unusual, but thankfully I had Flo there to help me through it. The plane journey was long, boring and delayed too which didn't help. And then when I got to the customs desk Stateside I was convinced that the man was going to reject me as I always seem to have problems with the fingerprints. But, you'll be glad to know, it went smoothly, and I got in the country without a glitch! Hurrah! However, complications weren't dodged there. When I got to Temple, I was given the wrong key and my roommate had taken my room accidentally. It's alright though, it's been sorted and everything's now on track!

I thought I'd be sharing a bedroom with my roommate, Tara, but we have our own rooms and share a little living room space and kitchen! Yay. However, the words 'microwave oven' do not seem to mean the same thing here apparently, so we're stuck with just a microwave and a hob - no oven, so I need to be inventive. My first meal was a burrito and I wish I could say I made it myself but then I'd just be lying. But I may as well make use of the lovely little mexican place next to my dorm!

The campus itself is great too. The neighbourhood isn't the safest place, as me and Flo nearly found out when we thought the taxi driver was going to drop us outside a crack den, but luckily the area is overrun with students as the campus is about the same size as Norwich! No wonder the North don't like Temple students very much.

On to Day Two...Me and the girls bought a Starbucks coffee (how very American!) and I had my first discussion with a Starbucks employee about England and the accent. Becca was told she looked like Posh Spice (twice in two days may I add!) and Flo tried a blueberry bagel. I tasted a little bit of it and it was delicious, so go try one, England! We then explored campus and went to two international orientation meetings where we met four German students and two ladies from Puerto Rico, who told us they would teach us salsa at some point. This has yet to happen, but I'll keep you posted. Jaime, the international advisor, did say, however, that she has a zumba class on Tuesday evenings downtown, so next time you see me, kids, I may be a zumba pro! I'd actually never heard of it in my life before, so I'm learning a lot here. We later met Becca's roommate, Adrienne, who is from a place not far from Philly and she filled us in on the American way. Apparently a lot of transfers go to Temple, which we seem to be discovering everyday!

Day Three - I went to my first convocation! For those who don't know, it's an introductory assembly welcoming Freshman (yes, Freshman, not Freshers) to the University. I was like a child and got very excited at the sight of the Dean, the Temple President and all the other important University figures in graduation-style gowns and hats. And to make me even more hyperactive, the welcome speeches was followed by a music student singing an operatic version of the American National Anthem and then a PEP RALLY! You've got to love the Temple Owls. However, me and the girls felt a little lost when everyone started singing the team song, so our only option was to watch on in awe and try and sing along. A day or two later, I managed to learn the whole thing and it goes a little something like this...
"T for Temple U...U - niversityyyy. Fight fight fight for the cherry and the white. For the cherry and the white we'll fight fight fight!"

The first American football game is next Friday against Villa Nova so I'm going to be singing my little heart out!

Oh and check out Temple's symbol in the background!

Later that day, after joining in with the jubilee on Liacouras Walk and watching the crazy sorority dancers/steppers, we headed to City hall and Market Street in search of bedding and all I can really say is that the city is beautiful. Check out this peg [see below] that stands at the side of the street. So, word of advice, visit Philly at some point in your lives as it's great and very cultural! After shopping at K-Mart and then ending up much further North than we intended on the SEPTA ride back to Temple, we ate meatballs and had a nice little chat with Adrienne and her friend, Adam. Adam was thoroughly intrigued to learn about England and to be taught a few English sayings. This then led to a lengthy discussion regarding the differences in food between America and England; we recommended a good Sunday lunch and the obvious fish and chips and they told us to try a Philly Cheese Steak. Geno's or Jim's seem to be the popular vote amongst the Temple bunch! Oh and another interesting word to note: 'Hoagie'. It's Philly slang for a sub, or a huge sandwich!

The peg.

Later that night we met Dan and Chad who live at the end of the corridor (leaving the dorm room door open whilst eating and chatting works a treat when you want to meet people!) and then went to Greasey turf field and played Tug of War where we became part of 'Team Edge', challenging the other dorms to Tug of War battles. It was the most inventive and mental activity that I've seen in a Welcome Week and I even managed to graze my foot amongst the excitement. The Edge came third though, so my injury wasn't for nothing! The Freshmen certainly know how have fun here.

Friday - This was the day we met the our little 8th Floor group. All it took was socialising amongst ourselves in the corridor for a while and suddenly we were surrounded by about 10 people, all of which are so interesting, so unique and so American! Most of them are from Pennsylvania, Tanairi is from NY and Yeoun Joo (or Jeezy as she is now aptly named) is originally Korean and moved to America a few years ago. That girl had guts considering she didn't know a word of English before arriving here! We later had dinner with them all (I had an amazing stromboli) and then hung out in one of the dorm rooms. It was so fun getting to know more Americans and to trade slang and other cool bits of information between the cultures; they all love the English accent so that's always a good starting point! We then went to see a hypnotist and I can safely say that it was one of the most hilarious things I have seen. One guy from the audience was even hypnotised accidentally. The best part of the show, however, included the volunteers thinking that a belt was a snake and going absolutely crazy, one girl trying to count down from 10 to 1 and missing out the number 5 each time, followed by her attempting to convince the audience that her and another volunteer were not dating or intimate even though he kept saying 'Yes!' or 'Oh Yeah!' every time the hypnotist questioned him about it. Oh and the show ended with the "victims" thinking that an audience member had stolen their bellybuttons. So you can see why I had a great time. Tanari, on the otherhand, remained cynical.

As we met some friends, Flo, Becca and myself thought it would be nice to hang out the next day so we went to City Hall and South Street with Morgan and Tanairi. A hell of a lot of walking was involved but it was worth it. The area is stunning, varied and a little bit vintage. We went into a thrift store, a cool poster place, we saw Macy's and Mr William Penn on the top of City Hall, cool cobbled streets that looked a bit English and Philly's Magical Garden (a garden and house made of mosaics!):

This was so cultural and so beautiful. Probably one of the best pieces of architecture I have seen.

After dehydrating ourselves and feeling utterly exhausted we went back to The Edge, ate and then partied with the gang. The Americans certainly drink differently to what we do - Thank you Jeezy! We also had a free ticket to go and see Wale (pronounced Walaaaaay) who is apparently "the best thing to come out of D.C". We weren't so sure about that so we left in search of a party. No luck there either so we called it a night.

Sunday was Target and Ikea day. Becca was in her element. Travelling on a yellow school bus from Temple's Student Center to Target was my personal highlight! We then went back to our dorms and I got a knock on the door from Morgan who had made me two CDs :) Beautifully decorated and a lovely welcome gift:

The night came to a close by going to a mini luau (well not really a luau, but there was pork, Welch's grape soda and cookies) in front of our building. This was free food may I add, which can be added to the mass amounts of other freebies that we've acquired this week, including T-shirts, bags, pens and even a set of IPod speakers!

I then proceeded to get very scared about my classes on Monday so I decided to go and get a little stressed out in my room and try to get myself prepared. It's now Monday and my class doesn't start til 5:30pm! Crazy, crazy. I've been bricking it all day! I'll let you know how it goes.

Until next time...

Getting Nervous Now

So I've decided to set up this blog to document my adventures in Philadelphia for the year so that I'll remember what the hell I've done and also so people can stay in the loop. This is without a doubt one of the biggest endevours I've ever embarked on, so this blog could get very interesting.

I'm leaving for Heathrow airport tomorrow morning, so wish me luck! Peace out, England.

The best leaving present. Thank you friends!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NubH5BDOaD8   I've decided I'm going to be like Rocky and do this!
